Weekend in Midtown East

Plan the perfect NYC weekend from Hotel 57 in Midtown East with dining, shopping, iconic sights, and effortless access to the best of New York.

If you're planning a weekend in New York City and want to actually enjoy it rather than spend half your time in transit, where you stay matters a lot. Hotel 57 New York City puts you right in the heart of Midtown East, steps from some of the city's best dining, shopping, and iconic sights. As one of the best boutique hotels in Midtown Manhattan, it's the kind of base that makes a weekend feel effortless. You step outside and the city just opens up. Whether you are after a classic NYC experience or something a little more off the beaten path, this itinerary has you covered.

Friday Evening: Arrive and Settle In

Get checked into your room or suite at Hotel 57, some with a terrace, and take a moment to appreciate what you have got. The boutique design, marble bathrooms, and that rooftop with skyline views are genuinely hard to beat for hotels in Midtown NYC. Once you've settled in, head out for dinner.

Where to eat: Midtown East has a solid dining scene that tends to get overlooked in favor of downtown. For dinner, consider client-favorite spots like PJ Clarke’s, Rocco Steakhouse, Nerai, or Aquavit for a memorable first night in the city. Try The Campbell at Grand Central Terminal for cocktails in one of the most stunning rooms in the city, or explore nearby cocktail favorites like Monkey Bar, The Bar Room, Wildcard Bar, or The Naked Pig for a lively evening scene.

After dinner, take a stroll through the neighborhood. In the evening light, Midtown East has a different energy, quieter and more relaxed than Midtown West, but still unmistakably New York.

Saturday: The Classic NYC Day

Morning: Grand Central and Breakfast

Start your Saturday with breakfast near Grand Central Terminal, just a short walk from Hotel 57. It's one of those spots that never gets old. The main concourse, the light coming through the windows, the sheer scale of it all. Grab breakfast at nearby cafés such as Sarisa Cafe, Cafe Joyeux, or Gregorys Coffee for a relaxed and reliable start to your day.

Note: Grand Central Oyster Bar is not open for breakfast, but it’s a great option to return to later for lunch or dinner if you want to experience a New York classic.

As one of the most central hotels near Grand Central Station in NYC, Hotel 57 lets you walk there in minutes, no subway needed.

Mid-Morning: Fifth Avenue Shopping

Head west toward Fifth Avenue. Bloomingdale's is practically on your doorstep, and it's the kind of department store that warrants a proper visit. From there, walk up to the classic Fifth Avenue stretch and browse as you please. Saks Fifth Avenue is nearby, along with plenty of other shops and galleries.

Afternoon: Rockefeller Center and Central Park

Make your way to Rockefeller Center, another easy walk from the hotel. If you haven't been to the Top of the Rock, May is a great time to go since the weather is mild and the views are clear. From the observation deck you get an unobstructed view of Central Park stretching north, which is a genuinely impressive sight.

Speaking of Central Park, it's one of the main reasons to stay at hotels near Central Park rather than somewhere further downtown. In May, the park is at its best. The trees are full, the flowers are out, and the whole place feels alive. Spend an hour or two walking through the southern end of the park, stopping at Bethesda Fountain or renting a rowboat on the lake if you're feeling adventurous.

Evening: Dinner and a Show

Midtown East puts you within easy reach of Broadway. Book tickets in advance for a show on Saturday evening. The walk from Hotel 57 to the Theatre District is easy and pleasant.

Before the show, stop for a quick bite at Oxford Cafe, KazuNori, or Maman for a convenient and high-quality lunch or early dinner option.

Sunday: A Slower Start

Morning: Brunch and the East Side

Sunday is for taking your time. For a relaxed brunch or coffee, revisit favorites like Gregorys Coffee or try another nearby café such as Sarisa Cafe or Cafe Joyeux. After brunch, explore the East Side neighborhood around Lexington and Third Avenue. There are independent shops, bookstores, and coffee spots worth wandering into.

Afternoon: The Met or a Museum Run

If you haven't visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently, Sunday afternoon is a good time to go. It's a short cab or Uber ride from Hotel 57, or an easy walk through the park if you're feeling energetic. The current spring exhibitions are worth checking ahead of time on the Met's website.

Alternatively, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is another option if contemporary art is more your thing.

Late Afternoon: Back to the Hotel

Give yourself time to come back to the hotel, relax on the rooftop if the weather is good, and enjoy the views before heading out for an early evening dinner. Sunday nights in Midtown East tend to be quieter, which makes it a good time to try somewhere you didn't get to earlier in the weekend. This is also a great opportunity to visit Grand Central Oyster Bar for dinner, or explore any of the recommended dinner spots like Nerai or Aquavit if you missed them earlier.

More to Add to Your NYC Itinerary

One of the best things about staying in Midtown East is how much is within reach without a lot of effort. If you have extra time or want to mix up the itinerary, there's plenty more to explore nearby. St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue is worth a visit, a beautiful piece of Gothic architecture sitting right in the middle of the city that tends to stop people in their tracks. The Chrysler Building is a short walk from the hotel and one of the most iconic pieces of Art Deco design anywhere in the world. You can't go inside, but seeing it up close is worth it. For something a bit different, Bryant Park is a lovely spot to sit with a coffee, especially in May when the outdoor events season is just getting going. If you want to get out on the water, the East River Esplanade is an easy walk east and offers a completely different perspective on the city. Tudor City, a quiet residential enclave just off 42nd Street, is one of those hidden corners of Midtown that most visitors walk right past but is genuinely charming. There's no shortage of ways to fill your time in this part of the city, which is exactly the point.
